Warren Kobbeltvedt, Petra’s Planet for Schools business manager of the Americas, shared eye-opening statistics on the sheer number of youth using social media and the need to provide digital literacy programs in early education programs.
Petra’s Planet for Schools is a cross-curricular, safe and controlled environment designed to empower children to become active global citizens. Inclusive functionality, including the ability to access ’twin’ classes from other countries to share information with, has made the resource highly popular in Finnish schools. It has proven to motivate and engage students between five and 12 in an online learning environment, teaching important digital and social media skills.
Created in collaboration with teachers, Petra’s Planet for Schools is an ideal resource to support the learning across the curriculum, providing learners with a range of engaging activities for online social and community-centered skills, such as simplified email, chat, games and group activities. With the understanding that a high number of under age children use social media regardless of the age limit and potential dangers, Petra’s Planet for Schools gives children an introductory route in to social media while using their excitement to teach them a broad range of classroom skills.
Features such as a blog and a twin class, which offers students the opportunity for virtual interaction and sharing with a peer class, help teachers guide students as they develop communication, collaboration and creative skills. Twinning with classes in different locations and sharing blog content with distant peers ensures students gain a sense of global cultural awareness and allows them to collaborate with ideas and content under their teachers’ guidance.
